As part of the seventh generation of video game consoles, it competes in the market with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii. The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with details of the console's launch and games released later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

The Xbox 360 features the Xbox Live online service, which has been expanded from its predecessor on the first Xbox and has been updated regularly throughout the console's lifecycle. It was available in two flavors (free and for subscribers) and allowed users to: play online and download games (via Xbox Live Arcade) and demos. In addition to online multimedia features, the Xbox 360 allowed users to stream media from local PCs. Several peripherals gradually appeared on the market, including wireless controllers, larger hard drives, and Kinect, a motion-sensing camera. The release of these additional services and peripherals ensured the growth of the Xbox brand from a pure gaming device into a multimedia device of all kinds.

Launched worldwide in 2005-2006, the Xbox 360 was initially a scarce commodity in many regions, including North America and Europe. The first versions of the consoles suffered from a high failure rate, indicated by the so-called "red circle of death", which necessitated an extension of the warranty period on the device. Microsoft launched two redesigned models of the console: Xbox 360 S in 2010 and Xbox 360 E in 2013. By October 2013, the Xbox 360 had sold 80 million units, making it the seventh best-selling video game console in history. Though not the best-selling console of its generation. TechRadar named the Xbox 360 the most influential console on the market due to its emphasis on digital media distribution and multiplayer gaming on Xbox Live. The successor to the Xbox 360, the Xbox One, was launched on November 22, 2013. Microsoft plans to support the Xbox 360 until at least 2017.

The Xbox 360 was launched with 14 games in North America and 13 in Europe. The best-selling game on the XBOX 360 in 2005, Call of Duty 2, sold over one million copies. Five other Xbox 360 games sold more than a million copies in the console's first year of sales: Gears of War became the best-selling game on the console in 2006 with 3 million copies before being surpassed by Halo 3 in 2007 with more than 8 million copies.

Six games were initially available in Japan, with eagerly anticipated games such as Dead or Alive 4 and Enchanted Arms for Xbox 360 released in the weeks following the console's launch. Games designed specifically for the region such as Chromehounds, Ninety-Nine Nights and Phantasy Star Universe were also released in the console's first year of release. Microsoft also had the support of Japanese development studio Mistwalker, founded by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Mistwalker's first game, Blue Dragon, was released in 2006 and had a limited edition bundle that sold out quickly, with over 10,000 pre-orders. Along with Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean, Blue Dragon is one of three Xbox 360 games to surpass the 200,000 unit mark in Japan: The Last Hope. The other Mistwalker game, Lost Odyssey, also sold over 100,000 copies.
