The Sims 3: Pets is an adaptation of the computer game The Sims 3: Pets, but unlike that version, it is a standalone release and not a supplement to the original game. The game is similar to the original game, but for the console version it takes place in a new town, Sugar Maple Coast, exclusive to the PS3 console version.

The focus of the game is adding pets to manage sims. It adds cats and dogs as new playable characters that the user can control, in addition to animals like snakes, gerbils, and horses from the PC version. Each pet can be customized in the same way as human sims and have their own set of needs, traits and personalities. A new mystery system allows the user to complete quests around the city and discover information about the city's history.

Like the console version of The Sims 3, players have access to karma abilities that they can use to manipulate the sims and the environment. For pets, it allows the user to transmogrify the pet to become human, along with the ability to fill any pointers they need or cause a disaster. Kinect support for the Xbox 360 version also allows the user to use voice commands to control certain aspects of the game.
