Hard West is a turn-based strategy game in a western setting combined with some supernatural elements for Nintendo Switch. The player controls up to four characters through multiple scenarios with mechanics reminiscent of the X-COM games. Eight scenarios can eventually be unlocked from the main menu, with three difficulty settings and optional modifiers such as combat damage (debuffs for damaged characters, but stronger over time) and ironman, where the entire scenario must be restarted if a character is killed.

The main story has frontier themes and tells how a couple and their son travel the Oregon Trail. In a small village along the trail, overrun by outlaws, the mother is kidnapped. The father must rescue her, which plays out as an interactive tutorial. The play then begins years later when son Warren has become a man. Oregon was never reached, and instead they tried farming and also searched for mines to accumulate enough gold to head to Oregon again. While several scenarios continue the main story with Warren at the center, there are several side scenarios such as vignettes that feature other separate characters but with many common elements to the themes and stories. Each scenario generally has the player starting over, as advancements are not shared between scenarios.
