Detailed information

Product detailed description

The Nintendo GameCube (commonly abbreviated as GameCube) is a home video game console released by Nintendo in Japan and North America in 2001 and in Europe in 2002. The sixth-generation console is the successor to the Nintendo 64. Its rival was the Sony PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox from Microsoft.

The GameCube is the first Nintendo console to use optical discs as its primary storage medium. The discs are in miniDVD format, and the system was not designed to be able to play full-size DVDs or audio CDs, unlike its competitors, and instead focused on gaming. The console supports limited online play for a small number of games via a GameCube broadband or modem adapter, and can connect to the Game Boy Advance via a jumper cable, allowing players to access exclusive gaming features using the handheld console as a second screen and controller

The GameCube uses composite video cables to display games on a television; however, there are differences in the two GameCube models. Models manufactured before May 2004 also have the ability to use AV cables for digital components and progressive scan, and a second serial port. The label at the top of the console with the words "Nintendo GameCube" can be removed. This model is known as the DOL-001. The earlier features were removed in GameCube consoles made between 2004-2007; the later model was known as the DOL-101. The newer model has updated firmware that disables Cheat Action Replay and cheat codes (the newer version was developed to prevent this), and the disc-reading laser has been improved in many ways, though it is not as durable. The newer model came with a 48-watt AC adapter to power the console, while the original only had 46 watts.

The console was praised for its extensive game library and high-quality games, but was criticized for its external appearance and lack of features. Nintendo sold 21.74 million GameCube units worldwide before the console was discontinued in 2007. Its seventh-generation successor, the Nintendo Wii (some models of which have backward compatibility with most GameCube games), was launched in November 2006.
